The input that moves the result most is hardiness, so if you are unsure about one figure, that is the one worth getting right.

The model is a weighted sum passed through a sigmoid, which is what keeps the result inside 0–100 no matter how extreme one input gets. Water mismatch and attention push the number up; hardiness and soil check pull it down. The published weights are the whole model: hardiness at -1.1 and water mismatch at +1. They are shown in the table below rather than hidden, so you can disagree with a specific number instead of the result as a whole. Anything under 25 reads as the settled case; the top band, hospice care, begins where the pattern is consistent rather than occasional.

Read the band rather than the digits. The drought tolerance score is an ordinal signal, not a measurement — 41 and 44 mean the same thing in practice, whereas crossing into the next band genuinely changes what is worth doing. The more informative move is to change one input and watch how far the result travels. That sensitivity tells you which lever is real and which is noise, which is more actionable than any single reading. It is a model built on self-reported inputs, so it inherits whatever bias is in your own estimates, and it describes a pattern rather than predicting an outcome. High-hardiness species — snake plants, ZZ plants, pothos — tolerate weeks of drought and dim light. If your honest attention is low, choosing from this tier is engineering, not defeat.

Can I overwater a plant with love?

Absolutely — maximum attention with no soil-check is the calculator’s most common drowning pattern. The fix is not caring less but checking first; water the plant, not the calendar.

Why do most houseplants actually die?

Overwatering, by a wide margin — soggy, oxygen-starved soil causes root rot, which kills more houseplants than drought. This is why attention without a soil-check habit can be more dangerous than benign neglect.

How often should I really water?

No fixed schedule survives contact with reality — light, season, pot and species all move the target. The robust rule: finger-test about 5cm of soil and water thoroughly only when it is dry.

Does the pot matter that much?
