Two dates can be separated in two equally valid ways, and this calculator shows both. The calendar breakdown counts whole years and months by anniversary, which is what contracts and notice periods use. The absolute totals count actual elapsed days, which is what interest and deadlines use.
The two answers disagree in an interesting way. A "month" is not a fixed quantity: February is 28 or 29 days, and seven months of the year have 31. So a gap described as three months can be anywhere from 89 to 92 days depending on which three months they are, and the calculator reports the real figure.
Between 29 February 2024 and 9 August 2026 there are exactly 892 days. Expressed by the calendar that is 2 years, 5 months, 11 days. Neither number is more correct than the other; they answer different questions.
The formula
A- The earlier date
B- The later date
Y/M/D- Whole years, then whole months, then leftover days
ΔD- Total elapsed days, counting every leap day
How it works, step by step
- Enter the first date.
- Enter the second date — order does not matter, the result is absolute.
- The gauge shows the total number of days.
- The breakdown gives the calendar form and the other unit totals.
Worked examples
29 February 2024 to 9 August 2026
The total is 892 days, which the calendar expresses as 2 years, 5 months, 11 days. Note the start date is a leap day, so the anniversary falls on 28 February in ordinary years.
Why "three months" is not a fixed length
1 December to 1 March spans 90 days, but 1 March to 1 June spans 92 days. Same three calendar months, 2 days apart in reality.

Frequently asked questions
Does the order of the dates matter?
No. The calculator reports the absolute difference, so putting the later date first gives the same answer. Only pages that specifically measure direction, like days until or days since, care about order.
Why does the years-months-days form not match days divided by 365?
Because leap years add extra days that a flat 365 ignores, and because months vary in length. Dividing by 365 is an approximation; the calendar breakdown steps through the real months.
Is the end date included?
This page reports the gap between the dates, so it is an exclusive count: from Monday to Tuesday is one day. If you need to count both endpoints as whole days, use the days between dates page, which offers an inclusive option.
How do I get the difference in working days instead?
Use the business days calculator, which excludes Saturdays and Sundays and lets you subtract public holidays from the total.

| One century | 2000-01-01 | 2100-01-01 | 36525 |
A century contains 36,524 days, not 36,525, because 2100 is not a leap year.
